Top 7 Insider Secrets from Paleo f(x) 2018
Well folks, another successful Paleo f(x) conference for us here at Anabolic Aces is in the books. This was my third, and the second for Natasha and I as a team. In 2016, we happened to catch a talk by Reed Davis which introduced us to the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition paradigm. That day was a turning point which helped us change our lives and build a platform upon which to help empower others to do the same.
While we weren't able to make the trip in 2017, this year in 2018 we were back with a bang! I'm proud to say that all the hard work we've been putting into building our business felt like it all came together to create new connections and opportunities, as well as reconnect with old friends.
Amongst all this love-fest, we're not forgetting that we have a job to do! Mainly, digging up the best pearls of wisdom, nuggets of truth, and splendidly speculative ventures that just might change your life too. Read on to find out...
Keith Norris : Paleo f(x) Community Building
First off, we wanted to give a special thanks to Keith and Michelle Norris for putting on another stellar Paleo f(x) conference this year! The venue, speakers, production value, and vendor exhibits were all top-notch.
If you're a fellow ancestral health connoisseur or entrepreneur who's been living under a rock until this point and managed to not make it to Austin for this event, we highly recommend making the trip next year. Plus, central Texas brisket. 'Nuff said.
Ben Greenfield : PEMF
One of the running themes this year amongst biohackers in-the-know, such as Ben Greenfield and his guns, was the advanced healing potential of PEMF, or Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy. This relatively new modality has exciting potential for injury recovery, tissue regeneration, improved circulation, detoxification, reduced inflammation, and uptake of nutrients into the cells.
PEMF takes alternating current (AC) and transforms it into DC, producing controllable intensity variations ranging from low to high. As the voltage passes through a coil embedded in the body applicator, it emits a pulsed magnetic field. With each pulse, electrons inside the body are stimulated while the electrically charged cell membrane of each is gently pulled. In between pulses, cells relax. Essentially, the cells are exercising, like a person doing jumping jacks. This process facilitates the intake of oxygen and nutrients while dispelling toxins.
Several companies have devices which look like heavy-duty car battery charger connected to various mats and rings designed to direct electromagnetic energy onto the desired body part. Totally legit! Pulse Centers had a booth at the event, so of course I jumped on the chance to demo one of their premium units. I slapped a few paddles on my head and a mat across my abdomen to see what kind of brain and GI-tract stimulation I could get out of this thing, and WOW can you feel the difference once the tech cranks up the dials.
If you can find a local practitioner that does this kind of work, or it's in your budget to buy one of the portable units, we recommend considering incorporating this therapy into your wellness protocol for some serious potential benefits.
Dr. Joseph Mercola : Nrf2 and Oxidative Stress
Your mother told you to eat your broccoli! When you eat broccoli, you're getting dozens, maybe even hundreds, of super-nutrients that support optimal, body-wide health. One of those compounds is sulforaphane, a naturally occurring organic sulfur compound shown to have potent anti-cancer activity. Sulforaphane encourages production of enzymes that protect your blood vessels, and reduces the number of molecules that cause cell damage — known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) — by as much as 73 percent.
Consumption of broccoli activates nuclear factor-like 2 (Nrf2), a transcription factor that regulates cellular oxidation and reduction and aids in detoxification. Upgrading the Nrf2 pathway is the BEST way to increase antioxidant capacity. In addition to the aforementioned broccoli, colorful fruits which contain polyphenols offer an Nrf2 boost as well as less commonly known biohacks such as molecular hydrogen enriched water and cannabidiols (CBD).
Anabolic Aces are currently investigating a supplement line that has been shown to stimulate the Nrf2 pathway with a great degree of success. Keep an eye out for more details coming soon!
Dr. Ben Lynch : Folic Acid and methylation
Dr. Ben Lynch is the author of a book called Dirty Genes, which has quickly become one of our favorite resources. The book walks a reader through the impact a handful of influential genes can have on a person’s metabolism, mood, sleep, exercise recovery, and more. It is full of gems and written in a language that is accessible to just about everyone. In his talk at Paleo (fx), Dr. Lynch focused on one common supplement found in many formulations – folic acid.
Remember the hype about folic acid, especially for pregnant women? It was, and still is, one of the most common recommendations during pregnancy and one of the most common supplements in processed food. As these things go, turns out the research on folic acid wasn’t quite accurate or reliable. In their haste to get folic acid to the market, clinical trials done on rats didn’t quite translate to humans. Long story short, rats are able to efficiently convert the synthetic folic acid into a bioavailable folate form while humans are not. This leaves unmetabolized folic acid in circulation, which can bind to the now-famous MTHFR gene and block its activity. That’s right, block its activity.
Folic Acid in the blood inhibits transport of folate into the brain. In other words, supplementation with synthetic folic acid can be harmful, especially to individuals with an already compromised MTHFR gene.
What can you do? Check supplement labels and use ones that contain L-methylfolate (L-5-MTHF) or folinic acid, not folic acid. Eat plenty of dark leafy greens. This may sound like a broken record, but there is a reason for that! Folate comes from the Latin root “folium”, which means leaf. It’s in the name – eat your leafy greens. If you’re hardcore, eat or supplement with some organ meats too.
It’s worth noting that folic acid leaves the body within about a week of consumption, so if you have been supplementing with folic acid, once you switch your supplements, you’ll be on the right path in a week.
James Maskell : kNew Health Insurance Co-op
It's a bird, it's a plane... it's a flying woman with pink hair?! All joking aside, the pole served its purpose as a source of entertainment for those in attendances and as a tool for making connections. Here's Chad and Natasha with James Maskell, the founder of kNew Health. James is an influential speaker, a paradigm shifter, and author of the best selling book The Evolution of Medicine.
kNew Health is an alternative to expensive mainstream health insurance with the goal of revolutionizing health care and bringing functional medicine to the masses. The concept is basically catastrophic risk-sharing for those of us who primarily spend our hard-earned money on natural, self-care options. Personally, I'm very excited about this and can't wait to sign up myself! Keep an eye out for announcements on his kNew Health 40-city tour coming this fall, including Seattle, where you will find Anabolic Aces.
Paul Chek : Balancing Yin-Yang Energies
Never underestimate the power of master healer to teach through song and dance. When Paul Check, a holistic health coach, educator, and a sought-after movement expert, got on the keynote stage and performed a song/dance routine for each of the “Last 4 Doctors You’ll Ever Need”, the audience felt a sense of wonder. Sometimes laughter and connection really are the best medicine.
One key take-away from the rest of his presentation was: If you don’t like what’s happening in your life, carefully look at what you’re choosing unconsciously. This was well-illustrated with his slide showing the balance between the feminine Yin energy and masculine Yang counterpart.
In this wonderfully concise paradigm, we see the importance of keeping balance with our priorities and where we place our attention, focus, and "mental real estate". As Paul said in his talk "If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there!"
Typically in modern life, I would assert that the pressures most of us experience around trying to "do it all" have the tendency to tip the scales towards the Yang side. Yang energy is all about dividing power and spreading out into the world -a critical process to find new solutions, shed bad habits, and build networks to share information. It's the engine that drives society, and each of us as individuals, forward along with journeys. However, the inherent trade-off of ever-increasing division of your power (catabolic process), is inevitable over-stimulation and over-commitment.
Frankly, that's where we come in. Right in our name, Anabolic Aces, the anabolic side is all about restoring: resting and rebuilding to counterbalance all that tearing down. We can accomplish that with a variety of supports to help people, and check out how we work for an overview of the Aces up our sleeves 😉
Reed Davis: D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success® for the Win!
This man is near and dear to the heart of every FDN. Reed’s genius is evident in the way he assembled the FDN paradigm based on 5 basic pillars of health – Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress reduction, and Supplements. D.R.E.S.S.™ for short. Clever, isn’t it!
What we love about Reed is that no matter what someone’s health issue is or how complicated the case seems to be he always comes back to D.R.E.S.S.™ Based on his experience in a clinical setting overseeing tens of thousands of cases, Reed was able to take the vast (and arguably vastly inefficient) medical model and narrow it down to a handful of functional labs which offer the most actionable clues to guide the D.R.E.S.S.™ protocol. And it works! Time and time again FDN clients are getting better, restoring their vital reserve, and living happier and healthier lives.
Before Anabolic Aces was even a concept, we attended Reed’s lecture at Paleo (fx)™ 2016 and the rest is history! We hope you've gotten some helpful tips and inspiration for the future. Comment, share, or reach out to us to keep the discussion going 🙂
